ASUS VM 60 Vivo PC Review

Although less popular in the recent years, the classic ATX PC chassis are gradually replaced by more stylish and practical alternatives. On one hand we have the All-In-One PC types, which moves all its parts inside the screen, on the other hand, the mini PCS which are based on the Intel NUC concept, compact and easy to connect to the monitor that you already have. The Vivo Asus PC is an example of the second category, but is slightly different because of the adapted housing, which allows a 3.5 inch hard drive installation.

Overview

Apparently unrelated to traditional PCS, the ASUS VM60 PC takes the form of a square box, 19cm by side and just over 5cm in height. Under the brushed aluminium removable cover we can find a 3.5 inchd compartment for a harddrive, and below the plastic chassis fixed by screws this time, we can fnid an Intel platform, taken directly from the portable computers field.

The Vivo PC is more designed to be used as a living room PC, useful for watching movies with upto 4k resolution, which means it will also support ultra hd monitors like the asus pb287q presented here. It also supports internet browsing and online games that do not require too much graphical processing, hence the usage of Intel HD graphics. In your office, the mini Asus pc is a discrete presence, since the Intel CPU is took from the laptop field. Nonetheless, its perfect for working with office enviroment applications.

Like the Intel NUC mini-series PCS, the Vivo Vm60 is equipped with VESA mounting system that allows a monitor attachment in the back. The somewhat large housing allows the inclusion of a pair of stereo speakers and more options for connectivity. Thus, also in the back, we can find two USD 3.0 ports and hour USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA video outputs, S/PDIF digital audio and headphone jack connectors, microphone and a Line In connector. Not least, we will see the power button joined by a 2 in 1 card reader.

Performance and Usability

Equipped in our case with a 500GB hard drive, the Vivo PC comes with Windows 8.1 operating system already installed ( or optionally Windows 7 ), bundled with Norton Antivirus trial version valid for 60 days. We also got Office 2013 in our testing uni and got free access to Asus WebStorage services.
Helped with 4GB of RAM, the operating system starts surprisignly fast on a 7200 RPM hard drive and a Intel Core 15-3337U CPU, which would normally be reserved in the Ultrabook portables range.Nonetheless, it does not seem to be an obstacle for normal applications. And on the bright side, we got very low power consumption ( less than 15W in idle mode ), which recommends the Asus mini PC for activities that require continuous operations like a file server, media player, scheduled recording of TV episodes ( requires a USB TV Tuner ).
